Wordswell Communiqué | “Light”

Posted on 14. Jan, 2009 by brody in blog, communique, ideas, must read

The Nature of Light
Imagine two adjacent rooms sealed off from each other except for a perfectly tight door. One of those rooms is completely dark. The other room is completely light and bright, and it has no shadows.

You’re in the dark room. The door opens. What happens?

Immediately, light invades the darkness. Now, you can see! All that’s in the dark room is revealed. The darkness, completely unable to encroach on the light, is powerless.

Furthermore, the amount of light in the bright room has not been compromised. That room is still just as bright as before, yet it lends its brightness to the other room. What happened was not like pouring water from one glass to another; it was like sticking your glass under a fountain – of light.

Message Creation
At Wordswell, we’re always trying to find metaphors to explain things. It’s sursprisingly hard work, but it leads our clients and us to beautiful clarity.

In our new comments section of the Wordswell Blog, let us know what you think about this metaphor for what Wordswell does:

Message Creation is standing in one of two adjacent dark rooms, figuring out how to turn on the lights, and then kicking open the door to share your light with the world.

What’s it like where you’re standing?

Thanks for the insight….here’s a little addition. Think of an stadium “totally black”-full of darkness then imagine a person on the top row lighting a candle…guess what “you could see it from everywhere”-no amount of darkness can put light out (regardless of how small it may be). Light always pierces the darkness, not vice versa. That is a powerful thought isn’t it…

That’s a very powerful metaphor for sure. Being a musician I see a lot of darkness out on the road. People struggling with drugs, addictions, suicide, divorce, so many painful things that force people into the darkness so that they don’t have to see who they have become.

This encourages me to try to be a light to these people that they could catch a glimpse of God’s light, and they would be able to come out of the dark. No amount of darkness can ever overtake a light… what a great thought for the day. Thanks B!

    Pat-

Great tack-on to the light idea. I love it. We should do a demonstration of this sometime. Do you have any connections down at M&T Stadium?

    AdamDrums-

There is certainly power in the smallest bit of doing right, telling the truth, and processing it all through eyes of humility.

Doing those things through art might be the most effective way to present that “message”. Keep it up.

    Thanks guys,

I like the idea that the light in the bright room has not been compromised…at all – but still able to shine itself fully and unchanged.
